# Categories

> Create and organize the sections of your menu.

Categories group related products and help customers browse your menu. For example, you might create categories for **Starters**, **Main courses**, **Desserts**, and **Drinks**.

Every product belongs to one category. Categories appear to customers in the same order as in the menu editor.

## Create a category

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Edit menu">
    From the navigation, select **Edit menu**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a category">
    Select **Add category**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter its information">
    Add a name and, if useful, a short description.

    Keep **Translate category name** enabled if the name should be translated for customers. Turn it off for a brand or proper name that must remain unchanged.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the category">
    Select **Save**. You can now add products to the category.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Organize categories and products

Drag the handle beside a category name to move the entire category. The order is saved and used on the customer menu.

You can also drag a product to:

* change its position within the category;
* move it into another category.

<Note>
  A category with no publicly visible products is automatically hidden from customers. It remains available in the editor.
</Note>

## Set category availability

Use **Manage category availability** to show a category only on selected days or during selected hours. The schedule applies to the category and all of its products.

Outside the scheduled period, choose what customers see:

* **Keep visible and mark products unavailable** leaves the category visible but makes its products unavailable;
* **Hide the entire category** removes the category from the customer menu until the next available period.

<Tip>
  For example, imagine a **Breakfast** category available every day from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM. If you keep it visible, customers visiting after 11:00 AM can still see the breakfast products, but they are marked unavailable. If you hide it, the entire Breakfast category disappears after 11:00 AM and returns at 7:00 AM the next day.
</Tip>

The schedule uses the restaurant’s timezone.

## Add a category promotion

Use **Manage category promotions** to create a discount that can apply to every product in the category.

If a category promotion and a product promotion apply at the same time, you can choose which type takes priority. Promotions can also have their own schedule and can be temporarily disabled without being deleted.

## Edit or delete a category

Use **Edit category** to change its name, description, or translation preference.

<Warning>
  Deleting a category permanently deletes every product it contains. Move any products you want to keep into another category before confirming the deletion.
